The Indigenous Education Council (IEC) is a provincially mandated advisory council established through amendments to the BC School Act in October 2023. As of July 1, 2024, every board of education in British Columbia is required to maintain an IEC to support Indigenous student success and advise on Indigenous education within school districts.
IECs provide guidance and community voice on matters including educational services, Indigenous student achievement, cultural learning opportunities, and the integration of Indigenous perspectives and worldviews within schools. The Council also helps strengthen relationships and collaboration between school districts, local Nations, and Indigenous communities.
