New Spirit of Alliances

The Spirit of Alliances have been in our district for almost twenty years. The original framework had the artwork of Jamin Zuroski, a Kwakwaka’wakw artist. The original framework was developed in collaboration with community, local Nations, Elders committee, UVIC and Camosun, parents and students. Its original purpose was that it embodied our district Enhancement Agreement of the time.

Realizing the need to honour the local territory, our district sought to find a local artist who could capture the same animals in Lekwungen art style.

Jessica Joseph, from the Songhees Nation, has developed the new animals, emersed in a root ball of the chocolate lily plant. This plant is very significant to local people on Lekwungen territory and the buds flowering from the stem represent the four levels of our education system: Early Year, Elementary, Middle and High School.

The four animals that make up the Spirit of Alliances are the same four animals that were in the original framework. The characteristics have remained the same and the premise for using them have remained the same. All that has changed is the artwork.

All administration has had a workshop on this new model, as well, it has been shared with District Counselling and District Leadership Team. Recently there was a workshop offered at the Middle School Focus Pro D on this new framework. We look forward to offering more Pro D on this.

Our IED Library has 5 bins of the Spirit of Alliance animals, posters and cards. Please contact iedlibrary@sd61.bc.ca if you would like to borrow one of the bins.

As we continue to work on our IED Website, we will let you know when new resources for this model have been added, such as certificates and pictures.

While this is a transition period, we are honouring the old, while bringing in the new. Please feel free to acknowledge the old images, while sharing the new animal images.
