The Indigenous Education Division (IED) of the Greater Victoria School District was established following the work of a Commission formed in 1979 through a partnership between the School District and the Victoria local of the United Native Nations. The Commission reviewed and made recommendations regarding the educational and cultural needs of Indigenous students within the district. This important work led to the creation of the First Nations Education Division, now known as the Indigenous Education Division (IED).

The Greater Victoria School District resides on the traditional territories of the Lkwungen Peoples. We respectfully acknowledge the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations, on whose lands we live, learn, and work. Hay’sxw’qa – thank you. The District remains committed to supporting programs, learning opportunities, and curriculum that deepen understanding of Lkwungen history, teachings, values, and language.

The purpose of the Indigenous Education Division is to support improved educational experiences and outcomes for Indigenous learners by promoting practices grounded in Indigenous perspectives, knowledge systems, and ways of knowing. We believe that everyone has an important role to play in supporting Indigenous student success and in creating learning environments where Indigenous cultures, identities, and worldviews are respected, reflected, and celebrated.

IED provides leadership, guidance, and support to students, staff, families, schools, and community partners in four key areas:

  • Student Achievement – supporting literacy, numeracy, attendance, retention, and graduation
  • Belonging & Identity – honouring Indigenous perspectives, cultures, identities, and lived experiences within schools
  • Awareness & Understanding – building knowledge and appreciation of Indigenous histories, teachings, languages, and protocols
  • Relationships & Partnerships – strengthening collaboration with families, Nations, and community organizations to support student success

Through professional learning opportunities for staff, culturally responsive support for students, and meaningful partnerships with families and communities, IED is committed to fostering inclusive learning environments where Indigenous learners experience a strong sense of belonging, identity, and success.
